If you're going to use direct mail for a campaign, make use you don't rush it. You really need to plan ahead to get some good direct mail postcards or whatever medium you use. Rushed direct mail wastes money, and can turn people off.

The worst is template postcards that are not modified to your own message.

A couple good publications for helping use direct mail effectively are:

Inside Direct Mail: http://www.nmoa.org/catalog/insidedirectmail.htm

Who’s Mailing What: http://www.nmoa.org/catalog/whosmailingwhat.htm

Nice example of applied data mining. I wonder if you would use any other tool apart from Excel. It seems there are plenty of data mining, data visualization or business intelligence packages that you could use to do the segmentation of your voters and personalization of your campaign.
