Political Campaigns and Elections: Lessons for Every Field

One of the things I love about political campaigns and elections is that the lessons they teach can help us perform better in almost every career, niche and situation.  Psychology, statistics, advertising, technology, interpersonal communication; studying the dynamics and data from political campaigns can help us better understand all of these subjects and many more.

Political campaigning has taught me a lot of life lessons over the years. Even I was surprised, though, when analyzing election night returns recently led me to some important insights into a seemingly unrelated topic: search engine results.

Although I’m a local elected official and also maintain Killer Campaigning, my full-time career is in the field of Internet marketing (more specifically, search engine optimization).  If you have a moment, I hope you’ll go check out a post on my company’s blog about how I learned a surprising SEO lesson from the Scott Brown/Martha Coakley senate race in Massachusetts.

Like I said, studying elections and political campaigns can lead to some pretty unexpected lessons about how to do many different things more effectively.

What are some of the things you’ve learned from campaigning?

What is your favourite software for driving robotic telephony campaigns, for example to conduct opinion sampling and recruitment using the voice of the candidate on VOIP?
