So, what does this have to do with political campaigns and local elections? Well, it just so happens that Chef Gusteau's philosophy on cooking is very similar to my philosophy on political candidates.

In Ratatouille, the anti-Gasteau crowd is aghast at the idea that great cooks can come from anywhere, and think that…

For a blog like Killer Campaigning that focuses on political campaign strategy, this is great news: the Associated Press reports today that a record number of candidates are running for congress this year. More than 2,300 people are running for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, which is the most challengers that the Federal Elections Commission has recorded since 1975 when it started keeping track of this kind of thing. Here's a snippet from their story:

". . . Riggs is among the 2,341 people who have filed statements of candidacy with the FEC for the 2010…

Hold on to your hats, people: in a recent speech, George Mason University economics professor Thomas Stratmann claimed that "money is important in politics."

All kidding aside, Stratman's research does give us some interesting, concrete figures on just how much your your chances of winning an election increase if more people donate money to your political campaign. Here are some of the more interesting bits of data:

"Stratmann measured the probability by focusing on the amount a candidate spends on advertising. His findings revealed that a candidate receives slightly more votes when he or she outspends an opponent by $100,000…

Shaun Dakin has the word on some brand-spanking-new political campaign technology being used by the Carly Fiorina campaign in California that uses SMS/text messaging to make it easy for volunteers to do phone banking from their own homes.

The process is a little confusing at first, but here's a rundown: you text the Fiorina campaign to let them know you want to make phone bank calls. The Fiorina campaign automatically texts you back with the name and phone number of a targeted voter household. You make the call, note the voter's response, then text the results back to the Fiorina campaign. …

In today's political environment, it's one big constant campaign!

Great tips, Phil... I'd add one more that I learned the hard way while consulting on a state legislative race: take the candidate into account.

In the race I mentioned, the candidate was, well... a large man. And it was summer. A hot summer... you get the picture. Anyway, he insisted on wearing a full grey suit, and withing an hour he was showing sweat, right through the suit. Bad choice. Better would have been a dark polo shirt, one that kept him cool and didn't show sweat.

So, remember, keep your candidate in mind!

This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of a local newspaper doing. Apparently The Dominion Post, a newspaper published in Morgantown, West Virginia, decided to completely remove the images of three elected officials who appeared in a picture showing the governor signing a bill into law.

The Dominion Post apparently used Photoshop to manipulate the picture and remove the images of Marion County House of Delegates members Mike Caputo, Linda Longstreth, and Tim Manchin. Here's the before and after:

So, why the photo manipulation? Because The Dominion has a policy against running pictures of political…
